ActivTrades spread: opening P/L and rollover checks
Explain why an ActivTrades position may start below zero, how widening affects a quote, and which records help distinguish spread from other trading costs.
Read both sides of the quote
The spread article explains opening P/L through the bid–ask difference. Record both prices and direction; an ask-only chart cannot by itself explain a buy position's exit valuation.

Diagram explained
Check the recorded terms before acting
- Record bid, ask and direction
- Session changes can widen quotes
- Reconcile rather than double-count
Use a hypothetical quote
Assume a forex quote of 1.1000/1.1002 and a 0.0001 pip convention: the spread is 2 pips. This is arithmetic, not ActivTrades' current quote or pip cash value.
Watch the session boundary
ActivTrades identifies news and market closures/reopenings as widening conditions. Compare timestamps and liquidity conditions before concluding that a later bid–ask gap was the opening spread.
Do not double-count the same difference
Reconcile execution prices with separately booked commission or financing entries. Adding a second assumed spread cash charge can double-count a cost already reflected in the trade result.
